Black Water Rafting at Waitomo Caves, New Zealand

We’re ‘land-cruising’ around New Zealand for a couple of weeks.  First stop: Waitomo Caves. When I asked my friend Donna, who had come to NZ 25+ years ago what her ‘not to miss’ sights were, the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves were at the top of her list.  So, here I am:

The day included: Abseiling (rappelling), glow worms (actually the glowing poo of larvae), tubing, water slide, Flying Fox (zip-line, in the cave), jumping off waterfalls and finally climbing up three waterfalls back into daylight.  What a fun experience!  (With only a couple moments of claustrophobia – thinking  “how would I get out, if there were an earthquake right now…”)

About to descend

Descending into the dark...

We spent yesterday driving from west to east across New Zed and now we’re in the Hawke’s Bay region.  Doing something a little more ‘civilized’ – wine tasting and gourmet meals!  Yes, last night’s meal included sweetbreads and lamb’s tongue.  Hmm, glowing poo or lamb’s tongue – wait, which is more civilized??

Having a blast –

  1. WOW! And here I always thought I was adventurous! Power to you, sounds like so much fun! We extended our stay on Kauai due to the poor snow conditions back home. They got a few inches today, though. We’ll be home next Friday. I hope you’ll continue to have fun in New Zealand, and I’m glad I can respond to your website again:-) Maria
